Three core reasons: warming up before serious ranked games, learning a new role or champion without losing main-account LP, and playing with lower-ranked friends without distorting their MMR. None of these are about griefing — though abusive smurfing in heavily Bronze/Silver lobbies is a separate, legitimate complaint.
Streamers use smurfs constantly — it's the only way to make content from a Gold queue when your main is Master. There's no Riot rule against having multiple accounts, only against account-sharing.
How smurf accounts are made (and which are safe)
Three sources: hand-levelled (a person grinds a new account to 30 over weeks, no bot software), bot-levelled (script runs co-op-vs-AI repeatedly), or hacked/stolen (cracked from other players). Only the first is risk-free; the second is bannable; the third is illegal and reversible.
